biography

Bill Emmott is a writer and consultant best known for his 13 years as editor in chief of The Economist in 1993-2006, a publication he first joined in 1980 and served in Brussels, Tokyo and London.

He is now chairman of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, of the Japan Society of the UK, and of the International Trade Institute, an Irish-based educational body.

He served on Swiss Re’s senior advisory panel from 2006-19, is Senior Adviser for Geopolitics at Montrose Associates, a Strategic Intelligence consultancy, and serves on the advisory board for Airfinity, a life-sciences data consultancy, and the Comitato Scientifico of the Centro Einaudi in Turin. He is also an Ushioda Fellow at Tokyo College, University of Tokyo, and a trustee of the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin. He writes regularly for La Stampa in Italy, and the Mainichi Shimbun and Nikkei Business in Japan.

In 2016, the Japanese Government awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, for services to UK-Japan relations. He has received many awards for his journalism, including as the first non-Italian recipient of the É Giornalismo prize in 2004 and the Gerald Loeb Lifetime Achievement award, Anderson School of Management, University of California at Los Angeles.

Mr. Emmott is the author of 14 books on Japan, Asia, the 20th century and Italy. In 2017 he published “The Fate of the West”. His latest book, “Japan’s Far More Female Future”, was published in Japanese by Nikkei in June 2019 and in English by OUP in 2020. He was presenter and co-author of a documentary film about Italy, “Girlfriend in a Coma” (2013), and executive producer of “The Great European Disaster Movie” (2015), both shown on the BBC, Sky Italia and La7. His next book, to be published in 2024 by Taylor & Francis for the International Institute for Strategic Studies, will be entitled “Deterrence, Diplomacy and the Risk of Conflict over Taiwan”.
