Prof. Sergio Castellari is one of the leading Italian experts on adaptation to the impacts of Climate Change. He works at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Bologna.
Since 2021 he has been an expert for Climate and Environment at the Permanent Representation of Italy to the United Nations in New York.
Previously he was a 6-year Detached National Expert at the European Environment Agency (EEA) of the EU in Copenhagen.

Education:
Professor Sergio Castellari has a degree in Physics (University of Bologna), holds a Ph.D. in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography at the University of Miami and a Post doctorate in Physical Oceanography.
Activities:
He has been a member of the international Advisory Boards of the European projects Life RainBo, Life PRIMES and H 2020 PLACARD.
He was Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Life BLUEAP (Bologna Local Urban Environment Adaptation Plan for a Resilient City) project, which implemented the climate change adaptation plan for the Municipality of Bologna.
He was Coordinator of the European Topic Center on Climate Change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation (ETC/CCA) of the European Environment Agency.
He was the Coordinator of the project, funded by the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of the Territory and Sea (MATTM) which developed the National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change for Italy adopted in June 2015. .
From August 2006 to March 2015, he was the National Focal Point for Italy of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN body for the evaluation of science related to climate change.
For several years he was climate expert and MATTM negotiator in Italian delegations in multilateral sessions such as IPCC, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD, Group) and UN Environment Program (UNEP).
He has been Co-Chairman/Co-Facilitator of Negotiation Groups on climate research in sessions of the UNFCCC
He was a member of the Scientific Committee of the 1st European Climate Change Adaptation Conference (Hamburg, 2013).
In 2007, together with the other Italian experts involved in IPCC activities, he received a diploma of recognition from Prime Minister Romano Prodi and Minister Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio.
University Lecturer:
From 2007 to 2015 he was Prof. Castellari was Adjunct Professor of the course “Climate Change and International Policies” at the PhD in Science and Management of Climate Change at Ca’ Foscari University (Venice).
From 2005 to 2009 he was a lecturer at the Master of ‘Protection of the Global Environment and International Policies of the University of Tuscia (Viterbo).
In 2006 he was a lecturer at the Advanced Training Course “Environmental Cooperation and Sustainable Development Policies” at the University of Bologna where he was also responsible for the Didactic Area “Environmental policies and multilateral agreements: from the Rio Conference to the Kyoto Protocol”.

He is a member of the Scientific Committee of ‘Climalteranti’ a site/blog for training and discussion on the topic of climate change, and of the Scientific Community of WWF-Italia.
